De La Salle ran all over Del Oro on Friday, September 23, tallying 52 points and recording its second shutout in the opening four games.
The Spartans wasted no time getting started. On their opening possession, De La Salle traveled 80 yards in seven plays, capped off by a two-yard plunge by junior Antoine Custer to get his team on the scoreboard. This was just the start of an excellent outing by Custer who finished with 143 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries, all of which came in the first half.
From there, the Spartans were off and charging. De La Salle racked in 31 points by halftime. Throughout the game, the Spartans outgained Del Oro by a 334-yard margin at 495 yards to 161.
Complementing his fellow junior, Andrew Hernandez carried the ball nine times, gaining 88 yards and two touchdowns. In total, the Spartans recorded six touchdowns on the ground.
De La Salle’s lone passing touchdown came when Anthony Sweeney hit Devin Asiasi for a 31-yard score. Sweeney finished having completed 8 of 11 passes for 127 yards.
On defense, De La Salle was superb. The Spartans constant pressure forced five sacks, an interception, a fumble, and blocked a punt. Failing to cope with the Spartans relentless cover, the Golden Eagles were never able to stimulate any offensive momentum.
This victory moves De La Salle up to 9th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings and 2nd in California.
The Spartans’ next challenger is 63rd ranked Servite. They take to the field on Saturday, September 27.
