Ranking 2nd in California and 1st in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings, De La Salle ran all over Granada High School in their playoff opening shutout. The Spartans’ running backs combined for all seven touchdowns in their 46-0 victory.
After a 19-point first quarter, De La Salle added on 27 more before the half giving them the 46-point lead that would last for the rest of the game. With a running clock in the second half, the Spartans did not strike again, but managed to keep Granada off the scoreboard.
Getting things started early, De La Salle’s all-star running back, John Velasco, lead the ground game, racking in 146 yards and two touchdowns in 11 carries. Helping Velasco out was Antoine Custer who carried the ball five times for 34 yards and two more scores.
Defensively, the Spartans were flawless. Junior Kahlil Mckenzie led the team with five tackles, one of which was a sack for a loss of five yards. Kevin Griffin intercepted the Matadors quarterback to set De La Salle up for their first touchdown of the game.
The outstanding play on both sides of the ball pushes De La Salle to the Division I Semifinals where they meet Deer Valley. The two teams face off on November 29.
